Our History

Radio-signal dog fences have been available since 1973 when Richard Peck invented and patented an electronic pet containment system using an AM radio signal broadcast through a wire in the ground. The signal was transmitted to a receiver worn on the pet’s collar. He called his invention an “invisible fence.” He trademarked the name and started the Invisible Fence® Brand*.

In 1990, DogWatch® entered the industry to offer consumers an alternative to the Invisible Fence Brand. DogWatch developed and patented an FM version of the equipment to provide a safer containment system. The FM signal is less prone to interference from other sources, and thus safer for your pet (see below). DogWatch has perfected the FM technology and is now in its fourth generation of containment products.

Over the years, many companies have come and gone. The electronic pet fence industry grew from two manufacturers in 1990, the Invisible Fence Brand and DogWatch, to thirteen manufacturers in 1993. Much of this growth came from companies that offered do-it-yourself products. Most of these vendors are no longer in business.

In 2006, the Invisible Fence Brand was sold to PetSafe®, a division of Radio Systems Corporation. DogWatch remains one of the only independent privately held companies in the industry. Our sole mission is to provide pet containment and training products that keep your pet safe and that are safe for your pet. DogWatch is not part of a larger profit driven corporation with multiple interests; we know that key to our success is keeping the focus on product quality and customer satisfaction. DogWatch is a proven leader with a solid track record and over 20 years experience. You can count on us to be around to support you now and in the future!

DogWatch offers professionally-installed products and state-of-the-art equipment. We make sure your system is installed properly and that your dog or cat is trained. Our goal is your pet’s safety and your satisfaction.

AM, FM, & DM SIGNAL IMPORTANCE

Other radio-signal pet fence companies advertise their products as offering DM, or “Digital Modulation”. They describe this as the most modern and up-to-date radio transmission technology for pet containment systems. The “next generation” that is newer & better than FM radio. Anyone comparing brands or technologies needs to be aware that this claim is nothing more than marketing hype meant to "gloss over" the fact that they do NOT have FM signal modulation. Please, don't be misled...

Digital Modulation (DM) is a radio signal processing technology used to send and receive information over FM (Frequency Modulation), or AM (Amplitude Modulation) radio waves. It's commonly used today in almost any device that performs some type of communication. Everything from cell phones to robotic lawn mowers function by sending "digitally modulated" signals over an FM or AM radio band. Although DM is based on AM/FM radio technology, it is NOT a next generation replacement for it. Rather...

Digital Modulation is the "digital" form of AM/FM radio.

Everyone is familiar with the differences between AM and FM radio. It’s widely known that FM signals are far more clear and secure than AM signals. This is why FM music plays over the radio with no static and fire/police departments, air traffic controllers, etc., all communicate exclusively over FM channels. Quite simply, digital FM is superior to digital AM.

When applied to a radio-signal pet fence system, digital AM-based brands are constantly subjected to interference inherent to that technology. Ultimately, a digital AM system is prone to "misfire", correcting or shocking your pet indiscriminately. This can lead to a confused and frightened animal.

A digital FM DogWatch Hidden Fence system does not respond to radio wave interference and therefore is safest for your pet.

Digital Modulation (DM) is the radio signal processing technology used by ALL pet fence products available on the market today. No matter if the product is based on AM or FM radio, DM is the technology used to process the transmissions. There is nothing special or unique about the use of DM within the pet containment industry. All products available today use this technology.

The reason other pet fence companies stress the importance of Digital Modulation is because their products are actually AM radio-based.

Since digital AM radio is inferior to digital FM, these companies are forced to use marketing hype in an attempt to compete against the ONLY manufacturer in the entire industry that offers an FM radio-based product: DogWatch®. By drawing attention to a commonly applied technology (DM) and making it “sound” like an advancement that differentiates their product, these companies are attempting to divert attention away from their greatest weakness: an AM radio-based product.

ALL pet fence companies use Digital Modulation throughout their entire product line(s).

To help illustrate AM versus FM digital radio signals, let's use your car radio as an example. Installed in each (late model) automobile is a “digital” AM/FM radio. Regardless if the channel you tune to is AM or FM, a “digital” (DM) radio is processing the incoming signal, providing you with your listening program.

Regardless of who manufactured your car (Ford, BMW, Toyota, etc), the radio is using a form of Digital Modulation to interpret the AM or FM radio signals. What makes one radio station sound far better than another is usually a matter of whether it's an FM station or an AM station. Similarly…

One feature that makes our Hidden Fence product more advanced than other brands is simply the FM signal we use...not AM.

*Because “invisible fence” is a registered trademark of The Invisible Fence® Brand, other pet containment products cannot be called “invisible fences.” That is why DogWatch products are referred to as Hidden Fences.

DogWatch has made a huge difference in our lives. One of our two dogs was an expert escape artist. This dog would get out of our fenced property daily by tunneling, jumping and actively looking for places to escape. Several friends highly recommended DogWatch and spoke of Troy's excellent customer service. Troy and Andrew came out to do the pet fence installation and train our dogs. Both of our dogs are very different and needed slightly different approaches for training. One is high energy and repeatedly tested the Hidden Fence. The other is a timid rescue dog and needed to be handled with care. The customer service provided by Troy was impressive, and he identified what each dog needed to ensure successful training. Troy went above and beyond for us, with prompt phone support and a second dog training session. We would definitely recommend Troy and DogWatch!
